Andy Millne Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Search is being dramatically overhauled. I'll be blogging about this later this week. Woohoo!
Josh Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Wow! Are we talking about upcoming 3.1? Yeah, these are 3.1 changes, should be a blog post next week some time :)
Brunlea Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Have to agree, having moved to IPB from vB, IPB search is terrible and needs improving.
bfarber Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Have to agree, having moved to IPB from vB, IPB search is terrible and needs improving. Just to confirm - what specifically would you like to see improved? Is it the features available, or the interface, or the results? It's best if you are clear in what you would like to see changed, otherwise we might assume the changes being made will cover everything, when you have a pet peeve we're not thinking of. :)
.Ian Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 personally I would like to see fred wilma being the same as +fred +wilma - in otherwords the same as Google's search.
A Walk in Faith Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Just to confirm - what specifically would you like to see improved? Is it the features available, or the interface, or the results? It's best if you are clear in what you would like to see changed, otherwise we might assume the changes being made will cover everything, when you have a pet peeve we're not thinking of. :) Well here is my quick list without having given it much thought.... as I work tonight if I think or more I will add them here. :) For starters, I think the changes I just made to my site and released to the community should be built in. Your Active Search works great, but it needed tweaking. Adding the additional time frames 1 hour, 4 hours and 12 hours make is more defined and functional in my opinion. It also goes this without adding 'much' to the core. I think the Search This Forum, Search This Topic should both be at the top of the forums vs the bottom. (I know it's a template tweak, but throwing it in the same bar at the Rating is in just makes sense so I thought I would throw it out there for ya) Again a template tweak, but I feel like it should be 'standard' The View New Content should be a neat, clean drop down like the User Control panel with choices such as: View New Content I have not Read View New Content - 1 hour ago View New Content - 4 hours ago View New Content - 12 hours ago View New Content - 1 Day ago View New Content - 1 Week ago View New Content - 2 Weeks ago View New Content - 1 Month ago View New Content - 2 Months ago View New Content - 6 Months ago View New Content - 1 Year ago View All My Posts View All My Threads View Unanswered Threads View New Content since my last visit All of these options should be definable in the ACP so the Admins could turn on what they want or needed. Again, I know it's a template edit, but for me it's just one that makes sense. I am currently working on getting this type of drop down to work within my site. That's it for me right now.. I don't know or haven't used IPB enough to know the weakness in Search currently, so I can only address what I think makes sense now which are above. Thanks! Jamie
Gabriel Petrelli Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Personally I think the most relevant results be displayed first. I noticed when I've searched I get a bunch of irrelevant results at the top, and I have to dig through pages to find anything relevant. The search in IPB2 was better imho, I could almost always find what I wanted without a problem.
Wolfie Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Love the smiley. Consider it stolen :) You think I didn't steal it?
