Brett B Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 Just read the blog post -- very exciting. I think that as it becomes possible to receive notifications for more and more things, showing a popup for each notification will become cumbersome and messy. I just thought of an idea that might make things look more streamlined and a bit more Facebook-esque. IP.Board already displays a number inside a small green box on top of the profile picture in the top right for new PMs. My idea is to instead display the number of new notifications here (thus including PMs in new notifications). When a user clicks on the number to see their notifications, open a popup showing the last few notifications and a link to view all. If that's too hard, when a user clicks on the number, just bring them to the notification page. I just think a pop up for every notification might be a bit much. This is a bit more sleek, in my opinion. Either way, it's a neat new feature.
Collin1000 Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 I agree on the "facebook-esq" type view. Much more streemlined. However, the popup notification serve as a good way to ween users into using notifications. :) If push comes to shove, why not make it a user selectable choice? EX: When I receive a new PM: [ X ] Show popup on board index [ ] Highlight Notification Counter [ ] Email Me When I receive a topic subscription alert: [ X ] Show popup on board index [ ] Highlight Notification Counter [ ] Email Me
