Upgrade to 3.0, all I can say.

This is not a support forum, and 2.3 aren't actively supported by the community anymore. So I'll doubt you get any good answers by neither IPS or the community.

IPB's search function uses MySQL's search feature, so there's not much that can be done to improve it. If you have a dedicated server, you could take advantage of IPB 3.0's native Sphinx search support if you reactivated your license and upgraded.
