Martin A.
Make sure the hook is enabled in ACP -> Manage Hooks, and don't forget the various settings in ACP -> Manage Settings -> Hooks -> (IM) Messenger Captcha.

Mr. Despair
This only works in the actual messenger. Maybe that's why merlins lair thought it didn't work. Any plans to add the captcha when sending a PM via a member's profile or post info on showtopic? Would bots be able to send PM's this way? If not, I guess it's not really necessary. How about a little message under the captcha letting members know that it's only required if you have less than x posts?
Martin A.
Normally, bots don't parse Javascript (at least not what I know), so they don't see that popup window, but are transferred directly to the messenger form. Putting a message under the captcha image that it would disappear once you have more than X posts, will only encourage human spammers to spam your forum a little, before returning to the messenger, and continue the spamming there. But I don't think spammers is a big issue, especially not if you user IPS' spam service - that should capture most spammers out there.
Mr. Despair
[quote name='m4rtin' date='02 May 2010 - 07:33 PM' timestamp='1272843199' post='1947383'] But I don't think spammers is a big issue, especially not if you user IPS' spam service - that should capture most spammers out there. I see. I figured the main purpose was for spammers/bots. (But at the same time, if a bot passed the registration captcha, would passing the messenger captcha be just as easy?) Any good reasons to require a regular member to fill in a captcha if you know they aren't a spammer? None are coming to mind at this moment.
Martin A.
When I made this (for 2.3 originally) there were no known spam capture service, nor any mods that would help you out with it. And 2.3 had major issues with human registrations, which returned the login data to the bots that took over the spamming process on the site. This was when IPS introduced the "Time between each PM" setting, which was annoying, and I figured a captcha would be better. IPS' spam service wont catch them all - even tho I haven't heard of any issues with messenger spam in a long time, it wont hurt leaving this hook on, and only require it for members with less than 10 posts. EDIT: For the records, no bots can (yet) solve the reCaptcha puzzle. There are people who get paid for registering accounts on various websites/forums, and they send the login credentials to the bots.
