devee Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Hi! This is the most devestated change Invision Power have made since the beginning of IPB3. First time I looked on the "Hosted Communities" I was speechless. All those limitations! I've used the hosted feauture by IPS for a long time and I like it alot. Before the release of IPB3 I was planning to upgrade my existing site and had some more projects that I was going to launch. I was going to use the IP Hosted Communities for those but now it won't be possible. I contacted the staff asking if my existing board was going to be affected by any change in their hosting plans. They told me that my board was going to remain the same, and I thank you for that! I want to explain to you what would have happened to my existing board if I had to move to the new hosted plans. I'm going to go through each step. My existing board uses the old Hosting: Basic Forum for $10/month. It's perfect for my site, some months I have to buy some extra bandwidth because my traffic is very dependent on what's happening. This is what would have had happened if I had to change from the old Basic Forum for $10/month to the new Basic 10 for $10/month.Average Online Users What?! My forum is depending on what's happening daily. Some days I have 5 users online, some extreme days I have 300. If I had this limitation it would be a very serious problem for us. We wouldn't be able to have such a limitation, impossible! Period!File Storage Change from 100MB to 50MB! A 50% change!! I have IP.board and IP.Blog, occupying 60MB. Change won't be possible!Maximum Posts Change from unlimited to 10,000!!! What's going on IPS!! You can't be serious! When I go to a board, the first thing I'm looking for is how much posts the users have made. 10.000? I would probably close the page looking for another forum. We have 150.000+ posts, does this mean I need to change to the Plus 35 for $29,99/month?! Now I pay $10/month and the change would be $29,99/month, 200% more expensive!! And they suggest to delete the posts? This is irresponsible to do such thing to your lovely users! And as I mentioned before, many people chech the amount of posts on the board before registering! In conclusion, if I want my existing board to be hosted by the new hosted plans by IPS, it would cost $29,99/month. And in some time we're going over 250,000+ posts and then I would have to pay $44,99/month for something I'm paying $10/month today! 350% more expensive! This is just very sad to me and all the users. You make wonderful products and you have a great team but this is like a tumor that you have to take of. Your hosting plans was so healthy before! Thank you very much, devee
Brett B Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 I'm pretty sure the changes don't affect existing customers.

devee Posted July 3, 2009 Author Posted July 3, 2009 As I mentioned:I contacted the staff asking if my existing board was going to be affected by any change in their hosting plans. They told me that my board was going to remain the same, and I thank you for that! But I won't be able to start new projects with the new IPS Hosting Plans. And that's sad.

MGBrose Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Ouch. Wonder if its just not viable for them to have it at 100mb for the basic ten anymore. Would of expected though basic 10 to have 100 mb though and basic 20 to have 200 mb since basic 35 has 350 mb and super 50 has 500 mb.

Yorkshireman Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 I have to say at IPS their hosting is their weak point. Even with buying IP.Board you can get a better (specification) hosting plan elsewhere. I find IPS hosting plans to include low spec' for high cost.
Wolf Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Do you know how cheap you can get a VPS these days? Instead of complaining to IPS, shop for one. I've never used IPS hosting plans. I never want to. I love IP.board, though.
Alfie Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 As someone who has just purchased a Hosted Community I am pleased with the support that I have recieved. I think that the package is a very good deal for people who cannot afford to purchase a licence outright. I am a student so being able to have hosting and a forum all for $9.99 a month is a fantastic deal in my eyes. Yes, the 10 user limit may be small, but realistically most new forums won't start to get 10 users online at the same time for quite a while, and when they do they should earn some income from ads/donations to increase the hosting package. As for the maximum number of posts this can be combated by pruning and deleting posts if neccessary. All in all I think that the community hosting packages are a great deal, and my forum loads much faster than others that I have seen. Not to mention I get hosting support from IPB who are experts at optimization of speeds and stuff for their own software!
Brian Garcia Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Here are my two cents. Yes their hosting may be expensive, but you get what you pay for. IPS has always had great support & service. I went with a cheap VPS and nothing but trouble, I now pay a good amount per month for good hosting.
Wolf Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 I've got a VPS for around $10.00 per month. Runs my board great.
Alfie Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 [quote name='Wolf' date='03 July 2009 - 08:54 PM' timestamp='1246650875' post='1819711'] I've got a VPS for around $10.00 per month. Runs my board great. Did you get a free licence with free updates though? Yes, your hosting may have more storage and bandwidth etc, but for people who cannot afford to fork out how ever many dollars it is for a licence, I think it does prove to be a good deal. Not only that but you also don't have to worry about paying renewal fees. At the end of the day it comes down to personal preference. For those who are more tech-savey the VPS and other hosting deals that other sites do are a good deal. But for people like me that don't have a clue about how to host a website let alone install the forum software these deals are a real help.

From a licensed customer's perspective, it's a ripoff. No offense.
Rheddy Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 For $10 a month, why not just buy a cheap hosting plan? I've been satisfied with HostGator ever since I switched from Netbunch, after they crashed my entire site. Been with HG for 2+ years and I've never been happier. Plus, I have a lot of bandwidth and space to play around with. In addition, I pay for an IPB license as well.

From a licensed customer's perspective, it's a ripoff. No offense. It is not intended for people with a license :) Licenses start at $149.99 and cost $25 every 6 months - for very small boards, this is expensive - whereas $10 per month is much more feasible.
Alfie Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Plus with the larger hosting packages you also get Gallery, Blog and Downloads to be able to use with your community.
devee Posted July 9, 2009 Author Posted July 9, 2009 [quote name='EagleHawk' date='03 July 2009 - 07:50 PM' timestamp='1246650627' post='1819706'] I think that the package is a very good deal for people who cannot afford to purchase a licence outright. Do you know that if you purchased the same package for $9.99 a month before the launch of IPB3 (some weeks ago), that deal would have been something you can't imagine.
devee Posted July 15, 2009 Author Posted July 15, 2009 It's good to see that changes has been made! Congrats! But! Even if you have a board with around 8 users online and with 200.000 posts you have to upgrade to Plus 40 for $29,99/month?? Because there's no way of deleting posts of users. Forums should work as archives and not like a place to chat where posts doesn't matter! All posts of my users matters and should not be deleted! The post limit is a shame!
