Zero5854 Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Can we add a option to match exact phrase? Its a pain when searching for something to see a bunch of stuff that has one or two words of the phrase even though its not what we were searching for.
Wolfie Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Google.Com site:domain.name.here "exact phrase" :D Of course, not a replacement for what you're asking for (and it would definitely be nice to have 'exact phrase' available). Still, it's an option to tide us over.
Zero5854 Posted July 2, 2009 Author Posted July 2, 2009 well yes of course but then in that case why have forums at all? LOL
Michael Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Wrapping your search phrase in double quotes usually works best.
bfarber Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Yes, if you wrap your text in double quotes it should search for that exact phrase.
Zero5854 Posted July 4, 2009 Author Posted July 4, 2009 maybe thats all well and good for me but what about the common end user? Most people dont know that? would it be that difficult to add this feature? Most all other bb scripts have this feature...why cant we have it?
bfarber Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 To my knowledge must other BB scripts work the same way when using MySQL fulltext searching (which nearly all do)... It's how mysql processes the search. A plus sign + indicates the word must be included, a minus sign - indicates the word should not be included, and double quotes around the term mean "exact search". Even google searches work this way.
Michael Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 We used to have an option on the search page to explain those things like double quotes, + & -, but it seems to be gone now. Maybe restoring that would help folks who aren't aware of this?
bfarber Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 If that's all that's needed, I'd be fine with adding that back in.

Please do :) There is many users out there that don't know this, and is requesting this as a "new" future.
