More IPB 3 suggestions

After reading the latest blog post on the new search system I really think IPB 3 should have tagging on forum posts, gallery images, downloads, blogs, and blog entries if it's not already planned.

I know tagging can be done with a mod, but using a mod may cause issues (breaking all the tags they worked so hard to add) for future users when it comes time to upgrade to another major release.

I really think that tagging (and tag searching of course) should be either default in all the applications (On and off options included for it on each though), an official IPS addon, or a community project like IP.Tracker and IP.Shoutbox to make it easier for those who want it, a lot of different software are using tags nowadays, and demand for tagging is getting pretty high if you ask me.

Second, I think IP.Blog, IP.Gallery, and IP.Downloads should all lose the stat center at the bottom and be redesigned to look less like IP.Board, I don't know, they just don't look right with the way they try to look so much like IPB, the main blog page looks pretty good though, but the stat center doesn't fit with it in my opinion.

Last but not least, I think ALL moderation options should be editable, like the current multi-moderation system, but allowing all options, even the defaults to be edited.

Tagging - This is definitely on our radar, but will probably not be supported within the forum in 3.0 Having said that, you may see it in one of the applications, and it would be generic enough to be shared by other applications.

As for the design of the Blog, Gallery, and Downloads applications, we agree that they look a little too much like the forum right now. The last blog update did a lot to make that application feel more like a blog and less like a forum, and that will be our goal with all the other addon applications as well. Having said that, it's possible that a full overhaul of the design may not make it into the next release of each application.

So tagging will probably be in one of the applications, but probably won't be in IPB 3? I'd most like to see it in IP.Gallery (Even moreso than in IP.Board), but I do think all the applications would benefit from tagging, hope it does end up in IPB 3.0 though, I did find it quite useful when I was still using vB.

I think tagging has the most benefit to sites in the long run, tags get more useful as a site gets bigger (This is especially true with galleries, look at http://danbooru.donmai.us and you'll see what I mean, they rely on tagging to maintain a HUGE gallery, just shows how important tagging can be to making a large site and making a large site easier to navigate)

I think the long run of your client's sites should be something that should really have a lot put into it, I mean most companies' only focus in their software is what you'll need for a site, not what you'll need to create and maintain an easy to use large site. ;)

Tagging is simply a 'step' towards proper searching, sorta like how META TAGS were used for a while in search engines.

For gallery it's okay (since it's images)

But for posts, here's a cool new idea:

When posting, they can "Submit" and "Preview or Add Tags"

With "Preview or add tags" they are shown a Preview (like now), and it says, "Click the words that you feel are important". As the user clicks individual words in their posts, a list of them amasses at the bottom like so:

Runescape (x), Jagex (x), Game (x), Information (x)

The (x) removes that keyword.

I like tagging, but I don't think most forums use it well. Like having the right set up and rules who what words should be added as tags. Also tagging is best if a forum community is newer I think? I'd rather see a well supported mod and stand alone mod.
