Why? Competition is good. It keeps the companies on their toes. It forces them to keep up with each other, thus making the end product better for us.

I really don't think IPS sees this as competition, I think Matt made that clear when he said how he feels all the social networking stuff Jelsoft's adding are the wrong way to go.

I think this is a case of Jelsoft trying to beat IPB to adding social networking features that IPS isn't even planning on adding... basically vB's getting it's grave dug in the process.

I admit competition can be good, but this isn't really what I'd call competition. ;)

I find it very interesting that Matt said that and yet IPB was the first to put social networking features in.
They have friends and profile comments thats part of social networking - and the must important parts as well.
What else is there really?

The ability to comment on profiles is not social networking, it is just a feature commonly used on social networking sites.

They are still the essential part of a social network to me.
Remember when cjvj made the friends and comment mod for ipb shortly before it was added to the system it was called social network mod.

Also what features are not in ipb that are in social networking?

Besides for allowing members to have their own profile skin which I think would be cool as long as they were premade skins like bebo has.

It's about the focus. A forum is discussion-centric. Posts and topics are central, and everything surrounds them. Social networking sites are member-centric; they're all about the relationships between users. It's not just about this feature is social networking, or that feature is forums. It's about the overall focus of the product/site, and the way information is presented.

Excellent!

I'm tired of waiting myself.

techincally speaking there hasn't been a official release date so you can't be tired of waiting for it since you should only be waiting after the release date has been released at which case you might have it already :P .

You don't need a release date to look forward to the release of a product as long as there WILL be a release.

And yeah, I'm getting pretty excited as well. While I am of course excited for the hosted copy, I think after playing with it for a couple days it'll become tantalizing, teasing me by hiding the code and ACP from me. Despite having already seen IPB3, I'd probably be more excited for the public beta release than the showing of the hosted copy :D

If you re-read his post (it's kinda confusing), he's saying that he's excited for the hosted copy, and even then will still be excited to get the downloadable copy, despite the fact that he would have seen IPB3 by that point. Re-read his post a couple times, you'll get it.

To my knowledge, Retaliation.SG has not seen IPB3 yet. ;)
