Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications Matt November 11, 2024Nov 11
Posted May 14, 200816 yr I already posted this topic before, I hope the moderators don't get upset, but I thought it would give better input if I added a poll to this suggestion. Here would be a feature that would clean the boards up tremendously. If a user does not have permission to start a new topic (or add a reply) in a forum. Don't have the buttons appear to do this. This would cut down on end users getting error message when clicking these buttons. Bottom line is if someone is allowed to post or add a reply, the buttons would show. If they don't have permission, buttons won't show. Simple and squeaky clean. :) The other thing is that if a forum is read only, take the buttons out from this forum also, clean and no confusion. The question is? How possible is it to add this feature?
May 14, 200816 yr As Matt stated on a previous topic, it's not an option to remove the buttons from the design ;)
May 14, 200816 yr Like someone else said, at least when someone gets the error they know why they can't post rather than them being stuck not knowing and hunting around for non existant buttons.
May 14, 200816 yr Like someone else said, at least when someone gets the error they know why they can't post rather than them being stuck not knowing and hunting around for non existant buttons. Just some input, isn't that what the forums rule section is for? To let end users know what is allowed in a particular forum? :)
May 14, 200816 yr People read forum rules? Very good point Michael. If they don't see the buttons, they would be forced to view the forum rules. Which could be something as simple as:This is a "READ ONLY" forum. I think it would it would be cool that buttons show according to the permissions set for each forum. Perhaps even having an auto message at the top of each topic and/or forum showing (instead of even using forum rules) the forum status. Squeaky clean, no error messages for end users.
May 14, 200816 yr I think the best solution is to just have the buttons be grayed out and unclickable IMO. Someone suggested it in the other topic as well to where it shows the normal button if they are not allowed to post and a gray button with the same information on it. I think that gets the point across better because people see grayed out buttons all the time when on their computer.

As the buttons are images and on the current skin, quite grey anyway, I doubt many users would understand that - it would be different if they were HTML buttons.
May 15, 200816 yr LOL, that reminds me of the IPB 1.3 skin for 2.3 XD, anyways its not needed most people are used to how IPB works.
May 18, 200816 yr LOL, that reminds me of the IPB 1.3 skin for 2.3 XD, anyways its not needed most people are used to how IPB works. I have to totally disagree with you Zachary. Modders and gamers are used to how IPB works. The average end user (Internet user) has no idea what bbcode is or do they know what HTML even is.. NOR do the know how IPB works. This is the mold (mentality) is what I hope the developers break away from. I sincerely think that some groups realize this, and all the boards will either start putting the end user first or end up 5 years from now still just being a community of primarily modders that have great tools and ideas. But, will be sitting in a very small corner of the Internet world. Do not get me wrong, I appreciate everyone and IPB for this great service. A lot of great people. But I do believe that simple is the answer. Not only for the Internet end user but for the new inexperienced administrators and newbie webmasters looking for tools to do what they want to do on the INTERNET. :)

May 18, 200816 yr Well grayed out is a figure of speech. What I mean is an odd color that is different from the default skin. So for this skin something like a white or a light gray would be a "grayed out" button.
May 18, 200816 yr I don't care if the buttons are removed or just grayed out. But they should do something to show that they will not work.
