Suggestions for Future IPB Version

Mail-Out:
When sending in HTML format, to have the ability to specify what to display if the user has HTML disabled would be VERY beneficial. At present if it's disable on the email client then it's going to display the HTML code. which can really turn members off and may cause them to unsubscribe and even report as spam...

Polls:
The ability to create a "Poll Only" thread also a "keep votes private" option aswell.

Auto Subscribe to Threads
At the moment it seems that you can only subscribe members to automatically subscribe to all forums in the Admin panel. Can you make it possible to subscribe them to a selected amount i.e. have a box and the Ctrl+Click the forums you wish to automatically subscribe them to?

"Status Updates"
Much like how Facebook does where you have a "John is.... "insert text here" - these could show under your avatar on your posts/threads and also your profile, so you can show everyone what your doing. i.e Latest: John is Scuba diving this weekend, or John is looking forward to the party tonight... etc etc...that sort of thing.

Moderators Area:
Do you think you could give us a "Moderators Area" where they can manage users and have more user editing options?

Social Bookmarking:
Could you add social bookmarking links into threads so you can submit links to Digg etc?

Groups
Ability to create/join a group..all done via your admin panel

Blog/Gallery links
This is currently done via a mod, but having a "view my blog/Gallery" under you avatar on your posts will draw more attention to it.

Blog Homepage
This should probably be more intended in the blogs section but, having the blogs section more user friendly with the homepage having a "featured blog"/"latest blog" (admin specified) - and a list of latest blogs under it..etc would be more enticing rather than just a list,

SEO

Interestingly many people now goto VB just to harness the power of VBSEO and I know and know of people have converted to Vb because of the amount of traffic it can bring.

Invision has modules such as CommunitySEO/Minerva but if Invision had this built in ..sitemaps...SEFURL then you could be onto a winner. Just a thought.

Cheers.

Moderators Area - . We used to have this a long time ago. The went with inline moderation tools, and it has worked out very nciely for us. I did suggest at one point that there is an area where we can give moderators to certain ACP functions (like edit member, forum control, gallery mgmt, etc) with out giving the access to the ACP. This idea was shot down, but I still think its a good idea. Sorta like a mini ACP with some serious limitations.

Partial hijacking - If we could better restrict who can assign permission (ie the Admin editing another user to admin issue) then I think we would eliminate the need for my idea (IMO).

A timed poll would help too. Like something that's done on gamefaqs -- buy or avoid (wii, gamecube, virtual console, wii accessory, etc) -- stay open for about a day. I'm started creating the topic(s) on my forum, it'd be helpful to keep the poll open for like a day and after it alone closes, but the topic remains open for discussion.

Could we also have tags for when making topics. If possible if there is no discription of the topic, tags are shown below that describe the topic. Also if possible (and I think with my limited coding knowledge it would be) have the field (in creating a topic) be nice to the topic description -- or one and the same, just a checkbox for which you want.

Would it also be possible to have more customizable custom profile fields? --- Some forums probably create fields that some members want to fill in but still want to keep private (such as wii # . . .) if we select say text input only those options are shown. . .

if I think of more later, i'll add them to this topic or make a new topic.

I feel very strong towards point #1 (Closing polls but leaving open topics) I think that would be excellent , as i'm sure you and many other forum owners will appreciate that Poll's are always used and having the poll closed but the topic open for debate to discuss the results would be ideal, so yes, i'm all for that one!

Tags are great I feel for finding similar topics etc, would you not prefer to have instead a "Similar Topics" list at the bottom of the thread (which the amount shown is definable in the admin panel) - just a thought. Though Tags are great for categorising and can also help with SEO too, they do serve their purpose, especially if you looking for something specific, tagging it with the right keywords can enable people to find the info fast. :)

How about....

Customisable Styling for Profiles
The whole Web 2.0 boom is about social interaction and statement, hence the success with Social networking websites. It would be great to apply the same principles to the forum. Letting users change colours of certain elements of their profile (with some control as you don't want them to go wild) also being able to drag+drop the boxes like comments, friends to the side of your choice would be great, being able to create and join groups on the forum i.e. a Motorbike forum could have a groups for Honda Riders only and that's all managed via the profile, would be ideal.

Stackable Badges
Badges are a great way to give status to members, but at present it seems you can only assign 1x badge, would you consider giving the option to make badges stackable so if a member of the forum has earnt another status then 2 badges can sit under their username?

Sitemap Generator
Automatically create a sitemap for your forum would be excellent.

I'm the same with you really, I think I think of more i'll update this list too :)

Exuse me for my criticirm

A fresh installation of the board should pass xhtml validation - once content starts getting posted however, things get out of sync quickly.

I'm disappoint. Fresh install of 2.3.3 don't pass validation. For example, on this page in

<img src='http://forums.invisionpower.com/style_images/1/folder_profile_portal/gender_mystery.png' [b]id='pp-entry-gender-img-119684'[/b] alt='' border='0' />

dublicate id's in multiple user posts on page. There are about 10-20 those little thing in IPB default skin, which you can correct in few hours. I think it isn't so dificulty for IPS designers :)

P.S. I'm waiting impatiently for IPB 3.0, for new great modding futures and standart possibilities

Well, setting aside the fact that it's not as easy as opening the skin and throwing a random id in there (the ids are used in javascript, so they have to be very specific), our site isn't exactly a fresh installation now is it. ;)

A FRESH installation, as in you upload the files, run the install script, and that's it, will pass. That's a bit different than our 5-7 year old installation here. :P

I think he means that the instant a user posts twice in a thread, duplicate IDs will occur on their "online" image. Also, the Quote bbcode generates invalid HTML (amperands not escaped - at least here) - I am not certain if that occurs elsewhere since this forum is pretty much an upgrade of v1.0 if you follow the upgrade chain is it not?

Both these issues cause W3C validation to fail. Though of course the first one (duplicate IDs) is far worse, since it messes with the script accessible DOM in a big way (how DOES getElementById() react to that anyway?!?)

a reputation system should be a must

and then gradually focusing more on users own place/space.profile, with more options and upload possibilities

I don't think we should be overdoing it too much with the profile - after all this is forum software, not social networking software. Now reputation, I think we could possibly achieve by doing more with ratings - which we have in there now.

[b]Points System[/b]

No. Just no. For those of you not aware, that's a link to a 4 page debate on why we should not have Points Systems built in.

My installation is 2.3.4, one months old. If this problem has been solved in the last month, correct me.

+1, you exactly explain my idea. Thanks :)

Why not just create a non-root administrator group with access only to the areas of the Admin CP that you want them to be able to use? You can limit it right down to individual pages within sections of the control panel.

Also - I agree that a Points System should not be a default feature.

[b]Point System[/b] should be a must have feature!

Yes! 100% Agree.

My forum currently has 50,000+ members, if there was a point system 1 year ago, I am sure the number will be 100,000+. Points System will stimulate the exchanges between members. The forum I know which use points system most successfully is www.mop.com, it has been got into the Alexa top 100. Points system can make a forum 10 times Hot!

id like to see a new feature of the "custom profile field"

currently i can add a new field for people to fill out an "id" of a url. and it will display a clickable URL next to their posts. however. it only shows the "id" on the profile page. i wish there was a setting to show the exact thing the post page shows in the profile..

like. the url would be www.domain.com/index.php?id=34343 the users enter the 34343 and it will be clickable on the post page. however the profile shows the text "34343"

Is the idea behind this to allow the users to create links to external profiles, such as Facebook, myspace, Twitter, Digg, YouTube, etc? I agree that something like that would be really nice to have as a part of the profile system.
