martin armsby Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 This has been going on since version 1 on the Magix forums. Is there a setting somewhere thats wrong or does this simply not work.Other forums have this working as expected - you vist the forum - press 'new posts' and get a list of - well you guessed it, New Posts and threads of course. Why does IP board show read threads and old posts along with the new ones?ThanksMartin
Alex Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 It doesnt. It shows posts since your last visit, so if I visited yesterday, and there were 40 topics today, they would all display in that list until I visit next.Try logging out and back in, you will notice the list is cleared :)
martin armsby Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 Thanks for your awnser AH Modding.Thats no good - I'm comparing to other forums of which I am a member. This is the only board that shows old threads and posts in its 'New Posts' line up.So there is something missing then.It seems strange to get any type of old posts turn up in the search response after not having the computer on for days. The command is actually innapropriate. So now this is aknowledged I can post it on the bug tracker forum - is that right ?My suggestion is to make a note in the databank about the call, then put a time out of say 20 mins. Not base it on the user logging out and back in - users don't do that.CheersMBTW:Last time I was on this forum it was about getting 'New Posts' to show which threads on was active in - so thanks for fixing that in between times.
Alex Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 This would suit more as a suggestion, as if you put it in the bug tracker, they would flag it as working as intended. It probably wont change in the immediate future, probably IP.Board 3
martin armsby Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 I posted there anyway. Greyed out means 'read' by definition so 'new posts' is illogical and therefor a bug. We'll see how they cope.....CheersMartin
bfarber Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 It will be marked working as intended, I assure you.I'll leave this open as a feature suggestion though.
martin armsby Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Old, read posts are NOT 'New Posts'What is going on here? Justifying something that does somthing completly different to what it say on the label is beyond comment.I'd like to see 'New Posts' working soon please. Thank you.
bfarber Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 It's not broken. I can understand WHY you are wanting it to work differently, but it all comes down to a matter of semantics. You want "UNREAD posts" not "NEW posts". New is a measurement of time, really - NEW posts indicates posts that are NEW (in this case, posted since your last visit). What you want is UNREAD posts - there is actually a modification (there are several in fact) for this floating around, but it's just not how our new posts feature was originally intended to work. That doesn't mean we won't look into enhancing or adding to it in the future, but it's not *not* working.
martin armsby Posted July 24, 2007 Posted July 24, 2007 You want "UNREAD posts" not "NEW posts".No - you are not grasping this are you.'New posts' are Unread. How could they be other than thatSo why does the software show already read posts as NEWWhen users start inveting work-arounds its time ask why they're no happy with your product.I realize the biggest problem for betat testers is coping with developers that cling on desperatly to a false concept. The proof is looking you in the face - the fact your software shows closed greyed out folders in its 'new posts'.So, I've spent enough of my free time helping you out.Its up to you now..... have a good think about it before further justification.CheersM
bfarber Posted July 24, 2007 Posted July 24, 2007 Arguing the point is really moot - you are set in how you want it to work, regardless of any "justification" I may "argue". I was merely pointing out WHY it presently works the way it does. Your definition of "new" is different than the one used to generate the feature, at least initially. End of story. As stated (three times now) - we will look into enhancing it in a future version.
Jason L Posted July 24, 2007 Posted July 24, 2007 Being an outsider to the topic and having an unbiased opinion :P, here is how I see it.'Get New Posts' by definition means.... 'Get' => 'Search', 'New' => 'fresh or recent origin', 'Posts' => 'Posts'.So.... The new is the problem, the link title is simply ambiguous. Does it mean new to you, the user being that it's in your member bar OR does it mean new posts to the board? Being that this feature was, in fact, created for the board, it means new to the board.@Martin: You didn't need to come and tell a developer what it should do, if he created it, he created the feature to work how he assumed it should be created. He did achieve what he set out to accomplish. Why not ask him [Suggest], that there either be a new feature added 'Get Unread Posts', which he said he would consider, or ask to have the 'Get New Posts' changed to something less ambiguous.
