BBTFPM Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 Over the last couple of days when I've visited this site and clicked 'view new posts', there have been a large amount of locked topics.I have to admit to having various different thoughts on this, some amusing, some less than flattering, but also one or two constructive ideas that may improve the situation.I hope this thread doesn't descend into a debate about the rights and wrongs of what should and shouldn't be posted on this site, it's a tired and boring argument by now anyway. On some other forums, the moderators and admins move spam and other topics, sometimes to a dedicated sub forum which regular members can't see. But this can cause further confusion and sometimes results in members wondering where their thread has gone, or posting the same thing again. So my idea is this. With the exception of spam, which obviously needs to disappear into a black hole, topics which for whatever reason get locked, could be moved to a 'locked' forum, and as an optional extra, this could be set not to show up in 'new posts'. At least that way, they wouldn't clutter up the relevant list of new posts, and the original poster would be able to see where it had gone.

bfarber Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 Generally, I clear out locked topics every week or every other week to clean things up. I like to leave them in place for a short while so the member who posted knows their topic was locked, and why (rather than wondering where it went).
Dr. Awesome Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 However if it was a flame war you would generally want to zap it.
Strange_Will Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 Best idea:When a topic is locked/deleted, you can send a PM to the poster of the OT, or all postees in the topic, and attach the original topic if wanted.
stobbo Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 Best idea:When a topic is locked/deleted, you can send a PM to the poster of the OT, or all postees in the topic, and attach the original topic if wanted.I don't like the idea of receiving a PM because a topic I posted in was locked. And when the staff go through and close loads of topics which are asking for support it would be a waste of their time sending PM's, the time could be spent on development or support tickets.
UBERHOST.NET Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 I still prefer the idea of setting up a Multi-Moderation Suite to do the job, but after I posted, I realized the OP was talking about here on the IPS forums. >_< Sure, the forums do look 'messy' with a bunch of locked topics in the View New Posts view after a lot of locks (Monday morning, hehe), but Brandon has a solid point as to the reasoning.
