Arts&Faith Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 OK, I just had my site upgraded from 2.1.6 to 2.2.0 by IPS, who hosts my site.Overall my users' feedback is positive, but here's a few things they have noticed:The TRUNCATION of user names!! For example, "The Invisible Man" is now "The Invisible...". This is just "LAME" and unacceptable (my users' words, which I agree with). Can this be adjusted? Is it based on the width of the first column or is a specific threshhold that could be added to the ACP?From me -- often when posting, typically using "Fast Reply" I get an "authorization mismatch" failure. I don't get failures using a full reply.Initially, a lot of Javascript errors were reported, especially by those using Safari. (ex: The EDIT button doesn't drop down, and a very experienced Web developer in our community noticed lots of Javascript errors.) They seem to have settled down, probably since I recached the skin, but some are still reporting problems.I'm concerned about the stability of the new cookies. I have users reporting that, staying on the same computer, they are required to log-in again now through the day. I'm following up with them to see if any are being required to re-login inside of the session expiration value (3600sec/60 minutes--is that too long?) or inside of the cookie expiration limit (3 days; but my board's been upgraded for two days, so I can't really test that). They love the quicker access to features such as the drop-down in the RTE.They love the new ratings drop-down that gives a lot more information. They love (the $ group that I gave it to) the ability to PM users with full mailboxesThey have some misgivings about "gender" now being a field in personal profile. Can this be an ACP setting to disable? The Community Blog doesn't seem to respond to skin assignments from the ACPThere's a lot that like about 2.2.0; self-service user group memberships (as an option property of a group) is still my #1 outstanding wish.I'll create bug reports if these are real...
Arts&Faith Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 Oh, and one other piece of feedback from me: The (English) LANGUAGE file really needs to be reviewed for style/usage and consistency. (ex: Are they "users" or "members"? What's the rationale for using one over the other?)And Why are Some Things capitalized, seemingly at random? Should individual terms always be lowercase, with capitization being a variant or function performed on the text string? This is a long-standing issue; every time I upgrade I have to go through the entire language file and fix these inconsistencies.

TestingSomething Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 Yep, both need to be dealt with. I have reported the cookie problems forever and many people do and they will say hardly anyone is experiecncing it. Then with the truncation issue, I hadn't noticed or thought too much about it, but that is really going to be annoying people I am sure.As for gender, that doesn't matter because they don't have to set it.
bfarber Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 The cookie issues are relatively localized - meaning not EVERYONE is having issues with them. Still, there are dozens of cookie configuration options that could be causing your issues. We know you are having cookie issues BASHER. :) I've seen your posts. However, oddly enough, I haven't seen a ticket yet.
Guest Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 if you're already aware he's having issues there's no need for a ticket. :)
ColdinCbus Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 if you're already aware he's having issues there's no need for a ticket. :)There is need for a ticket if he would like IPS to fix it on his site, I would think.
Steve H Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 snipFrom me -- often when posting, typically using "Fast Reply" I get an "authorization mismatch" failure. I don't get failures using a full reply. Also experiencing this as are a lot of our members, this also happens when trying to reply to a PM.Authorization mismatch - please go back and try again. If you have been trying to access a function incorrectly, please use the proper method.

.KX Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 That's how it works. You submit a support ticket and someone checks it out and replies...they use it instead of the forums, amazing isn't it?
TestingSomething Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 I am aware of that. But they wouldn't be able to even tell unless they were monitoring it for days. Actually it's probablt when my IP changes though, so I guess if THAT is indeed the problem, they would use an account with 1 IP, then another.I dont know. I have a headache.
VelvetElvis Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 I've got an OCD support board. I can assure you, bug reports for every single language error will be forthcoming because I've got a couple people who will drive me insane if I don't report them. That said, the quality of the writing in IPB, the documentation, and the IPS site itself is not what it should be for a company that is trying to peal to a more professional demographic. I won't mention the dreadful Pakt Publishing book. This is a big area where IPS could improve.I agree about the gender field in the profile. There needs to be gender-queer options. Gender is a social construction. It is not binary. It's a spectrum. It has nothing to do with sex.

It never got past the first level support techs and they told me to post here so the devs can see it...
TestingSomething Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 The majority definitely would agree genders are male and female. That is where it is going too far to try to get IPB to change that. lol Or maybe they could let people add a custom gender if that is such an issue.
Michael Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 I have the same concern - i created a ticket they told me to disable the cookies on my board (which isnt why i created the ticket). It never got past the first level support techs and they told me to post here so the devs can see it...I think you most likely misunderstood what they told you, the support techs would never have said (or at least, they should never have said) to post here to get the devs attaention, they can already just send the ticket to the devs. There's also no feature to disable cookies on your board.
TestingSomething Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 Maybe they meant disable the stronghold one. All I can think of really as far as that goes.
