Black Prowler Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 I can't find any option for this in any version of IPB so I am hoping IPS considers adding this to a future version if it is not possible to implememnt in 2.2(which would be prefered.);)There should be an option in 'User Profile' settings that disallows validating users from inputing any information in thier profile untill AFTER they have validated thier account.I have issues with Spammers registering but not validating thier account(due to tougher requirements I've put in place.) However they continue to find ways to spam thier agenda on my forums. The latest is placing a link to thier sites in the signiture field. They also put a number(i.e. 3872309) and "Google' in the profile fields. I think it would be benificial to have an option where admin could turn off profile editing for validating users.Thank you! :)
Michael Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 Admin CP -> Management tab -> Users and Groups -> Manage User Groups -> Edit the 'Validating' group, select 'No' for the Can edit own profile info? setting.
Black Prowler Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 ah yes there it is  my bad! I already have it set to 'no' yet these spammers (and anyone else) can still imput/edit thier profile info. How is this possible?
Strange_Will Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 Purge all invalidated members over say... 5 days?
Black Prowler Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 I already do that between 1 and 3 days depending on board but that's not the issue...it still doesn't stop them from spamming in the profiles which I have to edit and/or delete the entire account and then ban thier ip, name and email. Quite tedious. It would be much easier if IPB had an option to disallow validating members to enter any info in thier profile until AFTER they have validated thier account. This is what I am asking for as an improved feature to cut down on spammers.
TestingSomething Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 As said earlier, though, that is already a feature. (unless it isn't as inclusive of everything on trhe profile as it would seem from its description).
Michael Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 What profile information do they appear to be editing?
Black Prowler Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 ok let me clear this up. The spammers are not editing anything. They are putting information in thier profile upon regsitering an account which is in validating mode untill the respond to the validation email. I do NOT want any VALIDATING users to be able to put ANY info into any of the custom profile fields or signiture areas of the profile. (I could care less about dropdown fields I just want the open fields and signiture field restricted.) As of current thier is NO possible way to do this in IPB. :ermm: I hope everyone understands what I mean now. :)
theclub Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 I tested this and it wasn't possible to edit the Profile Fields, only the signature and avatar.
Black Prowler Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 no no no...it's not the editing I am talking about...it's putting the info in in the first place! There is no way to keep anyone who is registering from inputting that info into the profile field or signiture field. I have the 'allow edit profile' thing set to 'no' Wanna test it...go to my Panthers site and try to fill the info in on registration and see what happens. :ermm:
theclub Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Are you talking about custom fields that you chose to be on the registration page?
bfarber Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 If you show custom fields on the registration screen, then of course they can input that when registering. That, too, is a setting. In 2.2 at least, user's shouldn't be able to edit their signature if they cannot edit profile info.
theclub Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 In 2.2 at least, user's shouldn't be able to edit their signature if they cannot edit profile info.Well they can, I tested it.
bfarber Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Then this must have been something I fixed since the last release. :) Because I just tested as a member on my local install with the permission set to No, and I get an error. So that issue will be resolved in the next build then.
Black Prowler Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 Are you talking about custom fields that you chose to be on the registration page? :unsure:yes I am talking about those AND the signiture field, which is also on the registration page.If you show custom fields on the registration screen, then of course they can input that when registering. That, too, is a setting. In 2.2 at least, user's shouldn't be able to edit their signature if they cannot edit profile info.ok so you are saying I can dissallow the use of profile fields on the registration page by selecting a certain setting in the profile field itself? I think I know what this is so I will have a look...that might help. But will the user be able to use that field after they validate thier account if I set it to not be on registration page?Well they can, I tested it.this is one of the problems I was talking about. Then this must have been something I fixed since the last release. :) Because I just tested as a member on my local install with the permission set to No, and I get an error. So that issue will be resolved in the next build then.Glad this will be fixed. ;)Edit: I switched the text field profile fields to not show on registration page so this should help combat the dirty little spammers :P It appears users who validate thier account can still imput the info so that will work though it's a small inconvenience. :)I would still like the option for dissalowing signiture input on registration page as a future feature in 2.2.1 if possible. ;)Thanx!
Stuart Elliott Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 I have just clicked your Registration page, and no-where on it, does the signature field exist.Custom fields on the registration pages, are something that are SUPPOSED to be there, IF you've got the "Include on registration page? - If 'yes', the field will be shown upon registration" radio button option set to yes, and yes they will be able to edit it when they're validated.
bfarber Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 The signature field is not on the registration page. ....
Working4computers Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 I haven't come across with a signature field on the registration page.:)
Black Prowler Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 ok then if it is not on the registration page(like I had thought) how are validating members putting in spam links and info in the signiture field before they validate thier account when I do not allow them to use most board functions untill they do? I checked the settings for the Validating group and thier is NO setting whatsoever to dissallow use of Signiture field.

Black Prowler Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 I thought he ment the 'edit profile' function has been fixed? Not sure about signiture field option. Clarification is needed.

Cool Surfer Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 I think this feature is there in phpbb forums.
Black Prowler Posted November 23, 2006 Posted November 23, 2006 Try posts 13, 14 and 15 :thumbsup:that doesnt answer the question regarding the 'original input' of information in the signiture field as a validating member. Editing information is a different function. ;)
