Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications Matt November 11, 2024Nov 11
Posted September 25, 200618 yr You used to be able to see members' signatures in their profiles. As far as I can tell, you no longer can. Is it possible to have this changed somehow? It's nice to see signatures when you search the member list for someone, but what I find more important is that I can no longer view my own signature by clicking on my name next to the "log out" option.
September 26, 200618 yr Same here, this should definitely remain in the profile. A big +1, and I don't even see why it was removed in the first place.
September 26, 200618 yr And while we're on the subject of signatures in places other than forum posts.... Can we have an option to NOT include signatures in PMs please?
September 26, 200618 yr Matt already explained why in another topic here. I personally would rather them be there still also though.
September 26, 200618 yr Community Expert Management The new profile page has no place for a signature. A signature, by definition, is a sign off on a message or posting.
September 26, 200618 yr The new profile page has no place for a signature. A signature, by definition, is a sign off on a message or posting.True, but that's not how most people use their signature. Many have a link somewhere, a quote, or, as in mine, a piece or artwork. Being able to see all that a user has to say about themself should be the goal of the profile, in my humble opinion.Anyway, you seem pretty dead-set in what you're going to do with this, though :(.
September 26, 200618 yr The new profile page has no place for a signature. A signature, by definition, is a sign off on a message or posting.I disagree, many members view others profiles to see their signature. Who searches a members posts, then view their message in order to see their sig?
September 26, 200618 yr True, but that's not how most people use their signature. Many have a link somewhere, a quote, or, as in mine, a piece or artwork. The new Personal Portal gives a member all the space they need to display whatever they would normally put in their sig, plus much more. One users become acclimated to the Personal Portal, I think they will use it in such a way that adding their sig would be redundant.I disagree, many members view others profiles to see their signature. Who searches a members posts, then view their message in order to see their sig? :whistle:So use the advanced search instead of the member search if you are trying to find a particular member's sig. Comes down to the same amount of clicks in the end.
September 26, 200618 yr you can always change it back to classic view in the admin cp if you dont like it

One users become acclimated to the Personal Portal, I think they will use it in such a way that adding their sig would be redundant. That's not necessarily true. Some users may put whatever was in their signature in their profile, but others won't. I want to be able to view signatures easily, not to be able to view what someone MIGHT put in their signature.Plus, if we don't have the premium features - I presume that's where the gallery option comes from - then there isn't exactly a place for everything in the new profile...you can always change it back to classic view in the admin cp if you dont like itWhat if I want to use the other features of the new system?
September 26, 200618 yr well i dont think it be to hard to modify the new profile portal to allow the sig
September 26, 200618 yr well i dont think it be to hard to modify the new profile portal to allow the sigWhich is what I'm requesting...
September 26, 200618 yr i doubt it will be an ips feature added but you can always ask someone at many of the 3rd party support sites who would have no problem doing it once the un-encoded version is released

The fact that we can fix a supposed flaw in the IPB system on our own forum doesn't make it any less of a flaw, it just means that IPB has a great modding system. That's good, but it would be better if the issue wasn't there at all.
September 26, 200618 yr The fact that we can fix a supposed flaw in the IPB system...It isn't a flaw in the system as much as it's member misuse of a feature. Sigs are intended to end a post, but it's fine if you want to put your favorite quotation or whatever there. Just add the same thing to your Personal Portal if you like, or if there's no proper way to add it then it can always be found via the advanced search.

This misuse is so pervasive across so many different forum systems, though, that it really qualifies as the norm.Regardless, if I'm looking at - for example - Today's Top 20 Posters, I should be able to find out what one of those users has in their signature. Similarly, I want to be able to see my own signature with relative ease, which I have always been able to do in the past.

Where would you prefer to see your sig on the new Personal Portal?
September 26, 200618 yr I think the reason the siggys are not in our personal portal is because most siggys are wide and would stretch out the portal and mess it up?
September 26, 200618 yr Okay, so in essence your gripe is that it now takes one extra click.I'm sick of this "boohoo, one extra click" stuff that I keep hearing. There's a blanket "let's make the user do as much work as possible for a simple task" effect that's going in all across of IPB. Not only do we need to click on a very inconspicuous link in order to view our signature now, but we need to click twice to edit a post, to edit a forum in the Admin CP... the list goes on and on. It's a waste of time, and I don't how the "you can do it some other way" argument holds ANY water here.Where would you prefer to see your sig on the new Personal Portal?I'm not sure. Possibly below the first thread that is listed, possibly after the last. Somewhere, ANYWHERE, would be good.I think the reason the siggys are not in our personal portal is because most siggys are wide and would stretch out the portal and mess it up?That's what the new image resizing system is good for :D.
September 26, 200618 yr Let see if I can explain this...The focus of the profile system has changed, so as a results there is no place for the signature in the new profile system. The focus of the new profile system now leans towards a "personal portal".With the old profile system it was more for information. But the profile system has evolved to be much more than that. And if you don't like the new system you could always turn it off - I believe you have the ability in AdminCP to switch back to the old profile system (but i'm not 100% sure on that). For those that want it in the new profile system, that's what mods at IPS Beyond are for :).
September 27, 200618 yr ACP > TOOLS & SETTINGS > User Profiles > Personal PortalUse 'classic' mode profiles? If 'yes', the new profile portal will be disabled and the classic profile mode (IPB 2.1) will be used instead.@Gogf: I wasn't taking a poke at you about the extra click mate, I was just wanting to understand if that was your main issue.
