Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications Matt November 11, 2024Nov 11
Posted September 20, 200618 yr I thought I would share my personal feelings on IPB 2.2 since m,any others have done so already.THE GOOD:1. New RTE. Much needed, I like the skinning of it as well.2. Security improvements. Another much needed feature, hopefully this will prevent the major hackings that we saw with the 2.1.x series.3. New attachments manager. I quite like this myself, one of the better features IMO.4. Multiple choice polls. Another necessary feature, glad to see that this made it in. A bit confusing for newbies maybe though.5. The new profile page. This is both a plus and a negative IMO. It did need some work; but I somewhat agree with the Myspace crowd on here (if you get what I mean).THE BAD:1. See the 2nd half of point 5 above.2. No check length button any more with the new RTE. Maybe this is a bug?3. I don't like the smilie drop down idea either, as many have said. Will get tedious after addimg more than a few at a time.4. This release of IPB invalidates some of the mods for the 2.1.x IPB series; but then again I guess that is to be expected.5. The site seems to load slower - not good for people with slow servers, dial-up or satellite Internet, etc.OVERALL:I am very impressed with this beta build; in general I would give it a 9 out of 10. (By comparison the first public release of 2.1 I would have given that a 8 out of 10, especially after comparing it to this). The 9 being for the negative factors mentioned above. Not too bad IMO, by far the best release yet! :)
September 20, 200618 yr I agree that the RTE is a vast improvement, especially since it now works with Opera. I haven't tried the new attachment manager yet. What has changed about it?The only reason this board is slower is because there are far more people than usual wanting to see 2.2 for themselves, not to mention that much of the board is probably constantly being updated with more recent builds of the software in preparation for the first public beta on Sep. 22.
September 20, 200618 yr 2. No check length button any more with the new RTE. Maybe this is a bug?Did anyone actually use it? I've never had a use for it since I started using IPB, and I had not noticed it was missing until you mentioned it. I know just because
September 20, 200618 yr Did anyone actually use it?Nope. I must say I've never understood the use of this feature.
September 20, 200618 yr Did anyone actually use it? I've never had a use for it since I started using IPB, and I had not noticed it was missing until you mentioned it. I know just because I didn't have a use for it, somebody else didn't. To me it seems like it is one of those old school forum features which is just an excuse to use some JavaScript. I don't think it has a place in an RTE.I can't find it on the standard editor either ... looked at the alt attributes for every button and nothing says check length. I use it a lot on my site since I sometimes make long posts (weather data, coding stuff, etc.) and I want to make sure that I don't go over the limit. :)

I don't think it has a place in an RTE.I'm with you on that one, I never used it, although i would be nice if a warning appeared when you have gone over the max post limit. Again never happened to me, but would save a lot of time, if you have a huge post.
September 20, 200618 yr Problem with the check length feature is in javascript, it can't parse all the bbcode into html that is actually what is used to check the length on the backend...so it's always relatively innaccurate outside of b/i/u tags.
September 20, 200618 yr 3. I don't like the smilie drop down idea either, as many have said. Will get tedious after addimg more than a few at a time.Just toggle the sidebar, then you can add as many as you want.

September 20, 200618 yr My personal feelings on 2.2 are that I can't wait until 3.0 for the skin change. o:)Good one and I second that :D
September 20, 200618 yr It seems good so far... you really need to fix these though:v<{%dyn.down.var.human.version%}>{ipb.lang[none_found]}etc.
September 20, 200618 yr Management It seems good so far... you really need to fix these though:v<{%dyn.down.var.human.version%}>{ipb.lang[none_found]}etc.One of the version number that isn't setup in this beta and the other is from the Gallery tab I assume which isn't yet complete :)
September 20, 200618 yr My personal feelings on 2.2 are that I can't wait until 3.0 for the skin change. o:)I'm liking the new "Toggle Side Panel" feature! :D And I agree that a skin change would be nice, so long as it doesn't radically depart from this already professional and clean skin.
