xoligy
It can be very annoying when wanting to search for something under 4 letters that doesn't really have an alternative. For example I wanted to search for info about IPB's API but since it's under 3 letters it wouldn't let me. Since 99% of forums don't change this limit it can be extremely annoying. I don't understand why you disallow the words in the first place rather than just limit the results that will be shown. Anyway, my suggestion is to make allowed words which overcome this limit. Or if search has a word which is under 4 letters but also contains a word over 4 letters, the search is still caried out.
bfarber
It's not *strictly* IPB - Fulltext searching is limited to 4 or more words, and most site's use full text searching. And if the admin does not increase the minimum search term length, that is up to them - if the admin wanted to allow you to search for 3 letter words 1) They'd have to use manual search, or modify their my.cnf file to allow fulltext searches on 3 letter words 2) They'd have to change the minimum length in the ACP
Luke
I'm going to have to agree... It's not always completly necessary on other forums, but it definelty is on this one. And what's worse is it happens if any word has 3 characters or less even though other words have more. For example, I might search for: PHP, CGI, ASP, IPB, IPS, mod, the, etc. with any combination of words. I really dont care about other forums, as long as you have instructions how to allow 3 letter words. But on here, please enable it if possible because I search the community forums all the time for stuff.

My members have been complaining about the search engine ever since I changed over to full-text searching, which Invision suggested I do due to massive slow-downs on my forums. Now people can't use quotes to search for phrases or search for words with less than 4 characters. Any suggestions? Thanks!
bfarber
You can use quotes, they are supported. As are other wild card characters. The first block on this page explains changing the minimum character search term length (which defaults to 4)http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/ful...ine-tuning.html
Jim Alfredson
Thank you! Concerning using quotes, it really doesn't seem to work. If I do a search for "larry young" on my board, the engine just returns every post with either word in it, not both words. In other words, it returns every post with either the word "larry" or "young" in it, not both.Is there something I'm doing wrong?I just saw the Advanced Search Help window on this forum, http://forums.invisionpower.com/index.php?...mp;CODE=explain.None of these work on my forum. Using +larry +young just returns all posts with either word, as does "larry young". I'm really confused.
