IPB Portal...more functions needed!

I've found IPB's default portal to be rather drab. I've used bfbarber's portal since purchasing IPB back in May and I've loved it since it worked well with my needs. Since my upgrade to 2.1.1 I can't find a decent portal. None that work however. Even the IPB portal will not work for what I want it to do.

This is what I need it for. I have comic book board and I use the portal to show upcoming books, popular covers, staff contacts etc...I can't get this with IPB's portal. I can't create blocks as far as I can see. Also, the information blocks are too large and there should, IMO, be blocks on both sides of the portal. Is there anyway this could be done with the next release? From what others have told me they don't like the default portal and rather have something like bfarber's anyway. :)

I would love to have the functionality of the Blog for content layouts on the portal.

Alas, the portal I think is just a stopgap until the Invision Dynamic is out...

you can expand the portal as much as you want.. It comes with an awesome feature of modules... So anything you want, just write a small piece of code and it'll be there in your portal

Writing code is out of the question since I'm really not sure unless its just HTML. But I saw no where in the settings where to create blocks. Sure I have blocks and modules that work but the Gallery, Calendar and Board Online Users have no edit settings. I would like a random gallery image but I'm not sure how to go about it. Also, I would like the shrink down large info blocks just a little. Anyone know how to do it?

An IPB tech admitted to me the Portal doesn't work well. I can't even set it to my home page. The redirect page doesn't work and editing the index file doesn't work either. He told me we would have to wait until the next upgrade or version to be fixed.
