I personally dislike forums that do that, as the overlay covers some of the topic listing, and I like to move my mouse under the topic's in a way that people read with their finger under the words in books. For instance, mythtv (whether you are familiar with it or not just read) has a search box at the top of every page. When you mouse over it this whole box with advanced features comes out of no where and covers some important links ... its takes forever for it to disappear ... its just plain annoying.
