Greetings IPS community, It has come to my attention that this board is being improperly used by many people. I always see many threads moved out of here due to lack of what this board actually intends to be. How to use this forum properly: This board is used mainly to give tips and instructional strategy guides to help you with your board succeed. In order to do that, the topic starter writes a few paragraphs or sentences of instructions or documentations on how and what. This includes either a step by step instructions, or a few paragraphs or sentences stating what your trying to get your point across on. This does not include asking questions about something …

Wonder what other site owners are doing/using to promote content on social media platforms to help attract new guests and members. Previously I was using the IPS Promote tool for FB and Twitter, but the FB portion of that is gone due to the frequency and overhead of FB changes. However, that FB Promote feature worked well and created shared posts with a nice image to fit the post. Have many of you since shift to manual management? Or are you using some other level of automation or "one click" publishing? I know Zapier is an option, but the cost is something that isn't worth the return for some, especially for hobby oriented sites and site owners who aren't g…

Do you have plans for your community if you die? Do you have a way of smoothly transferring ownership? Most communities have one master admin who holds the login to the database, server, and ACP. That keeps the security tight, but what if the person becomes sick or unavailable? Most families have a last will, trust, or estate plan for their financial and legal affairs. But digital assets are just as important and often overlooked. How are you planning for the unexpected?

Hi, I recently started getting a noticeable slow down while using any related query action while navigating trough forums. Database itself is ~700 MB where largerst table are topics/posts ~283 MB. I run 4.7.4 version This is my.ini config. Any advice of how to improve it? # # The MySQL database server configuration file. # # You can copy this to one of: # - "/etc/mysql/my.cnf" to set global options, # - "~/.my.cnf" to set user-specific options. # # One can use all long options that the program supports. # Run program with --help to get a list of available options and with # --print-defaults to see which it would actually understand and use. # # For explanati…

This is something I've been trying to achieve over the past 12 months, a general increase in the level and quality of conversations, reducing the amount of bickering (rather than a good healthy difference of opinion) and users antagonising or winding each other up. We _should_ all be on the same side, supporters of the same team but after a lot of off the field problems our fanbase has become fractured and that's reflected in the content users post to our site. Other than just banning people, how do others discourage this kind of thing and try and bring the level up?

I wanted to let others know about a new application designed to help older sites that have lots of outbound links to improve their SEO. I have an older IPB community with nearly 1M posts, lots of old blogs (with comments), old articles (with comments), etc., and to deal with the huge problem of tons of older, broken links I recently had @DawPi develop an application to deal with this. For those who have a similar issue, here is a description of what it does. The current version of the application is called: (DP47) Bad Link Fixer for Bots 1.0.1 and you can search and replace links between post/last edited dates in older archived posts, articles, bl…

Anyone have a recommendation on how you can accomplish this? I was initially thinking of adding a custom Profile field that I can then require, and once set by the member, I could have a Group Promotion rule that will add/remove access to a given feature. The caveat I think is the Group Promotion Restrictions listed here: https://invisioncommunity.com/4guides/members-and-groups/promoting-members-r313/ Goal: If Profile field ABC is set to YES, then add to Secondary Group "YES Group" If Profile field ABC is set to NO, then remove from Secondary Group "YES Group" Solution: Set two Group Promotion Rules. When Yes, add "YES Group".…

I am thinking on converting from vb5 to invision. Right now, I am running a NewsPortal and forum in one package, which is realized via vbulletin 5. You can see it as an example here: https://www.bolidenforum.de --> Is it possible to a) convert all these news to invision? b) can I create the same with invision? So, the startpage is a news page with different categories and the users can also switch to the forums? It is important, that I can create the news articles in the frontend in a fast way, since we are posting many news a day. I do not want to post news articles via the admin cp or else. Kind regards!

Howdy, After working with the invisioncommunity software for so long I have learned some useful things about managing a forum / community, taking into account the fact that still a lot of community owners using this platform still do not know exactly how to manage it properly. So I decided to share my experience and the things I have seen over time to help other people who want to use this information. To improve the community and its administration. 1. Images || Including: Creating Groups, Signatures, About Me, Covers, and so on... Social > Profiles > Maximum profile photo storage size try to keep the upload limit to 100 kilobytes (kB). Social >…

So everyday I get dozens of new accounts flagged for admin approval because the spam defense returned a score 4. How do you deal with these? So far I've been checking the emails in the stopforumspam.com database and the IPs in the cleantalk.org database and if one of those returns that the account is a spammer, is it better to ban or delete the account? I'm worried that with banning I'll quickly end up with 10s of thousands of banned accounts in my database.

Any of you already added humans.txt? 😉 A few examples: https://www.netflix.com/humans.txt https://www.google.com/humans.txt https://www.gov.uk/humans.txt https://www.php.net/humans.txt About humans.txt It's an initiative for knowing the people behind a website. It's a TXT file that contains information about the different people who have contributed to building the website.

Today i found this site: http://seositecheckup.com take some seconds, but you will get an overview what you can do (need to do?), to improve your SEO. Attention: You can do only one check every 20 minutes! And you need to choose "All Factors" on the right dropdown-selector. BUT..... My site has an overall-Ranking from 44/100 !!!! :bye: :ermm:  :bug:

In order to attract more usage on my forums, I'm wondering if there is a way to easily post the latest posts on a webpage that would include pointers back to the respective posts. This is similar to the "Posts" module that I see on my forum home page (see the image below of the module I'm trying to describe). I suppose I'm asking if there is a module that I can easily incorporate onto a webpage which duplicates this module's feature.

When I started my 80’s forum I had created a how to video for new members on how to navigate the site. I’m not the best speaker and horrible at explaining but it did the job. It was a real basic video but many of my members on the forum which weren’t many lol found it very helpful. I had noticed people posting threads in the help section how do I do this that so I made the video. Unfortunately my 80’s forum isn’t around but nevertheless I did post the video on YouTube for all Invision forum owners to use.

Hello. I had an idea to replace the first three places in widget with trophy icons. I tried several times and was successful in doing it only using CSS. 😉 How to do it? Add the following code to custom.css: /* First Place */ .ipsWidget .ipsDataItem:first-child div.ipsDataItem_icon.ipsType_large strong{ display:none; } .ipsWidget .ipsDataItem:first-child div.ipsDataItem_icon.ipsType_large:after { content: "\f091"; color: var(--trophy-first--background); font-family: FontAwesome; } /* Second Place */ .ipsWidget .ipsDataItem:nth-child(2) div.ipsDataItem_icon.ipsType_large strong{ display:none; } .ipsWidget .ipsDataItem:nth-child(2) div.ipsDataItem_icon.ipsType_lar…

I'm interested in ways people have found of slimming down their IPS installation/theme to reduce clutter and generally make it easier to navigate. In the process of redeveloping my site so thought I would look at all options. One thing I have never been particularly fond of is the filters. I understand their importance but they do just look messy at the top of the page. Anyone done anything interesting with these?

I always thought these three pages are a "set" and getting to them once a user is registered can be a challenge to find them again. The Guidelines only appear if you added them to a menu item. The Privacy Policy is ever present on every page in the footer. and the Terms of Service - I think only is visible when registering (or admin changes it and requires users to agree ) (if you're using standard local pages vs external links to other pages.) So I created a simple custom block that has links to all three pages. And added the block at the top of each page. I hope you find this useful.

Hi all, I am floating the idea of members now paying paid subscriptions to access about half of the current forum, a section that has been free and built up over the years. Safe to say that majority of members arent happy with this and would rather leave than pay. So looking for ideas on how to add value for our current VIP members and entice others to become a VIP as well.

Protect Your Forum With D.M.C.A Safe Harbor I post this once a year or when I see a proliferation of copyright lawsuits against web publishers - here's some novel (not legal) advice. It seems that the safest way to protect your community from copyright law firms is to claim D.M.C.A Safe Harbor protection. By registering your sites on Copyright.Gov you might save yourself a lot of headache and big $$ money from content posted on your site without the copyright holder's permission - if one of your users posts someone else's content on your site without their permission, you might be liable. Safe Harbor was designed by congress to protect web publishers from suc…

Something I have seen occur in the past is that your daily forum hangout people acquire high reputation points based on a very high volume of posting and become the "experts" of your community. Sometimes they will say things and it sort of looks like they are the "senior voice" of the community, and it may not be really something you want to be taken as any kind of official message. Even worse is when you have crackpots that start making your community a negative experience. For that reason, I have disabled our reputation system, and the dynamics instantly feel better to me. Each profile is equal and no one has any kind of implied seniority. Just something to think a…

This may have been asked many times, but here is my turn. I have 3 communities going. The latest is going to be a demo site/real site for corporations to use. I currently work for a major trucking corporation and want to sell them on Invision. I am not sure which way to approach them. So here is my ask: Should I "contract" with them under my current LLC company? Then at what Rate Per Year? Should I be an "employee" with them and negotiate a salary? Then at what Rate per Year? Any other suggestions/questions on how to sell my skills in designing and administrating a community will be welcome. Thanks in advance, Jason
